We were approached by a company with an unusual problem. Due to the current design and implementation of the website, the website was more or less invisible to search engines, with no search engine results being returned in the top twenty positions.
Having a site with poor search engine results is not unusual, but this was a special case, the customer had a gym in Blaydon, but when searching with Google for a "gym in blaydon", in the search results, they were in approximatley 60th position, this was unexpected as Blaydon only has three gyms!
After some research I deduced that although the company staff were aware that f4L was an acronym for Fit 4 Less, I was fairly sure that Google and other search engines were unable to work this out. The clues were there, when searching for "f4l" a camera model was returned in the top result.
The site is a national franchise of gyms offering excellent facilities, without an annual contract being needed. Initially we are just proving our SEO ability with one of the sites, at Blaydon / Swalwell.
After visiting the gym's office I realised that updating the website was handled by a CMS (content management system), so although I was free to optimise the visible text, the HTML title tag and the Meta tags would have to be updated by head office. By saving the files I could run them through my optimisation software and quickly work out the best text metrics to be used. Also the ideal meta tags and page title tags were found, to be emailed through to head office.
I would not have thought getting a gym to rank highly amongst only two others in the area would be a difficult task. It was just a matter of how many relevant keyword phrases could we get to be top ten, and how many could we get to be page one, number one.
The solution was logical, stop emphasising the phrase f4l as it was not benefiting anyone and to optimise for what it was, a contract free, great value gym, fitness club, health centre, health club in the Swalwell and Blaydon area. Also optimise for the gyms facilities, a cardio theatre, power plates, bootcamp, spinning centre, resistance room etc.
After only one week and prior to the meta tags and HTML title tags being updated, the site now has sixty one page one, position one results and over 120 page one, (top 10) positions, a selection of which can be seen below.
